The Lagos State government says it has put in place a mechanism that will strengthen its relationship with the various market communities in the state, adding that it had started with the Sabo market in Ikorodu.

At the unveiling of the initiative, tagged ‘Ibile’, at Sabo market, where several issues bordering on street trading, hawking, sanitation, security and payment of taxes were discussed, the Special Adviser to the governor on Community and Communication, Kehinde Bamigbetan, said the initiative was designed to bring the state government closer to the traders.

He said the initiative would also enable the governor to educate them on the programmes of the government.

He added, “At the end of the day, we want to change perception and derive feedback. It is a reality check for us to know if what we believe in Alausa is also what people believe in the market. So the feedback is as important as the dissemination of information. We don’t want to assume that everybody knows everything.”

A statement on Friday noted that Aiyetoro Market, Epe; Sura market; Lagos Island, Oke-Odo; Alimosho and Alaba International/Rago markets would also be covered.

It added that the market women were also told the need to ensure that the market is kept clean at all times and that people should desist from sleeping in the market.

“Another issue is that women in the market should make sure they switch off all electrical appliances before leaving the market, because a lot of markets get burnt because of this simple negligence,” the statement added.
