#BBNaija: Gifty Powers Believes Big Brother Naija Show isn’t Transparent, Says It’s All About Connection

Gifty Powers believes Big Brother Naija Show isn

On Monday, August 12, 2019, housemates of Big Brother Naija “Pepper Dem” show who broke some of the rules were penalized respectively.

Ike was issued his second strike in the reality show for intent to attack his fellow housemate Seyi. The new strike means he might likely get disqualified from the game if he gets one more strike.

Tacha and Joe were also issued strikes after the pair were involved in a clash. While Mercy on her part received a final warning for damaging Biggie’s property when she broke the Oppo Mobile phone at a Saturday Night Party.

Reacting to Biggie’s judgement on Instagram, former Big Brother Naija housemate, Gifty Powers questioned the transparency of the show and said the reality show is all about connection.

She also noted that ex-housemates, Kbrule and Khloe were disqualified from last year’s show for breaking one of Biggie’s rules, which is ‘No Cursing.’ But in the case of Seyi, according to her, Biggie didn’t issue a warning or a strike to him despite the fact that he cursed Thelma and Ike on live TV.

Ebola Drugs Show ‘90% Survival Rate’ in Breakthrough Trial

An outbreak of Ebola has killed more than 1,800 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Ebola may soon be a “preventable and treatable” disease after a trial of two drugs showed significantly improved survival rates, scientists have said.

Four drugs were trialled on patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where there is a major outbreak of the virus.

More than 90% of infected people can survive if treated early with the most effective drugs, the research showed.

The drugs will now be used to treat all patients with the disease in DR Congo, according to health officials.

The US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which co-sponsored the trial, said the results are “very good news” for the fight against Ebola.

The drugs, named REGN-EB3 and mAb114, work by attacking the Ebola virus with antibodies, neutralising its impact on human cells.

They are the “first drugs that, in a scientifically sound study, have clearly shown a significant diminution in mortality” for Ebola patients, said Dr Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID.

REGN-EB3 and mAb114 were developed using antibodies harvested from survivors of Ebola, which has killed more than 1,800 people in DR Congo in the past year.

Two other treatments, called ZMapp and Remdesivir, have been dropped from trials as they were found to be less effective.

What were the results of the trial?

The trial, conducted by an international research group co-ordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO), began in November last year.

Since then, four experimental drugs have been tested on around 700 patients, with the preliminary results from the first 499 now known.

Of the patients given the two more effective drugs, 29% on REGN-EB3 and 34% on mAb114 died, NIAID said.

In contrast, 49% on ZMapp and 53% on Remdesivir died in the study, the agency said.

The survival rate among patients with low levels of the virus in their blood was as high as 94% when they were given REGN-EB3, and 89% when on mAb114, the agency said.

The findings mean health authorities can “stress to people that more than 90% of people survive” if they are treated early, said Sabue Mulangu, an infectious-disease researcher who worked on the trial.

What impact could the drugs have?

Hailing the success of the study, Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust global health charity, said the treatments would “undoubtedly save lives”.

The findings, Mr Farrar said, indicate scientists are getting closer to turning Ebola into a “preventable and treatable” disease.

“We won’t ever get rid of Ebola but we should be able to stop these outbreaks from turning into major national and regional epidemics,” he added.

A sense that Ebola is incurable, paired with widespread mistrust of medical workers in the DR Congo, has hampered efforts to stop the spread of the disease.

It is hoped that the effectiveness of the drugs, made by US-based pharmaceutical firms, will make patients feel “more comfortable about seeking care early”, said Dr Fauci.

But the best way to end the outbreak, he added, is “with a good vaccine”. A vaccine is a type of medicine that improves immunity to a particular disease, as a preventative measure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) say vaccines developed to protect against Ebola, which are allowed for “compassionate use” before official licensing, have proven highly effective.

How serious is the DR Congo outbreak?

The current outbreak in eastern DR Congo began in August last year and is the biggest of the 10 to hit the country since 1976, when the virus was first discovered.

In July, the WHO declared the Ebola crisis in the country a “public health emergency of international concern”.

But it is dwarfed by the West African epidemic of 2014-16, which affected 28,616 people, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. About 11,310 people died in what was the largest outbreak of the virus ever recorded.

However, attempts to contain the latest outbreak are proving difficult. In particular, militia group violence and suspicion towards foreign medical assistance have hindered efforts.

Earlier this month, three Congolese doctors were arrested in DR Congo over the killing of a WHO medic.

About 200 health facilities have been attacked in the country this year, causing disruption to vaccinations and treatments. In one incident, family members assaulted health workers who were overseeing the burial of their relative.

A 2018 study published in the Lancet medical journal says “belief in misinformation was widespread” concerning the Ebola outbreak.

What is Ebola?

The Ebola virus
  • Ebola is a virus that initially causes sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain and a sore throat
  • It progresses to vomiting, diarrhoea and both internal and external bleeding
  • People are infected when they have direct contact through broken skin, or the mouth and nose, with the blood, vomit, faeces or bodily fluids of someone with Ebola
  • Patients tend to die from dehydration and multiple organ failure

#BBNaija Housemate Khafi Faces Sack By MET Police As She’s Being Investigated After ‘Sex’ On The Show

BBNaija housemate Khafi faces sack by MET Police as she

Big Brother Naija housemate and Met Police officer, Khafi Kareem, 29, is being investigated for having sex on the show despite warning from her bosses not to take part.

A Met spokesman said last night: “A PC, attached to the Met’s transformation command, requested permission to take part in a reality television entertainment show in Nigeria. Permission was not given.

“The Met is aware the officer has since appeared on the show without authority.

“The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and will be carrying out an investigation into the circumstances.

“The Met does not support the officer’s appearance nor does she represent the Met whilst appearing on the show.”

The force added that any officer found to have breached police standards of professional behaviour could face misconduct proceedings.

The 29-year-old UK based, who was once a ‘poster girl’ for the promotion of female and black staff for Met Police and earns about £30,000 a year, was said to have forcefully left her job for the show.

It was also reported that the authorities made the move to start an investigation as she became the talk of the show after videos of her having sex with her love interest Gedoni went viral online.

Her TV appearances have left colleagues unimpressed. Speaking on the issue, an unnamed colleague told The SUN newspaper: “She’s a serving British police officer – it’s outrageous.

“She asked permission to go on the show but, when her request was refused, she went anyway.”

Another Met source said: “There should be no way back for her from this and her superiors will have to act.

“She fitted the mould perfectly for how the modern force wants to portray itself but seems to have got a bit too big for her boots.

“It’s hard to see how can she argue that she hasn’t brought the force into disrepute.”

Meanwhile, Khafi is currently up for possible eviction.

#QueenRadio: “You’re Used To Dealing With Stupid People, You’re Not Gonna Outsmart Me” – Nicki Minaj Kicks Joe Budden off Her Radio Show After Heated Argument

On Monday afternoon, August 12th Nicki Minaj appeared on Apple’s Beats 1 Radio for the latest episode of Queen Radio.

For the show, she had fellow rapper, Joe Budden and his podcast co-hosts, Mal and Rory, appear as guests. The purpose was, in Budden’s words, to make peace with the Barbz (Nicki Minaj’s fanbase) but the conversation ended with Nicki  Minaj kicking him off the show.

During the episode, Nicki accused Budden of calling her a liar, citing Budden’s recent podcast episode as well as an episode from Budden’s tenure on Complex’s Everyday Struggle to make her point.

She also said Budden claimed she was on drugs. “It’s okay for you to make me sound crazy and say I’m on drugs, right? That was okay too, right?” Nicki said at one point during her argument with Budden.

“Are you that fucking dumb? You like tearing down women when they can’t defend themselves. You’re so used to thinking you’re the smartest person in the room” she angrily repeated.

At this point, Budden’s mic was then cut off, but the interview continued with Mal and Rory.

The titanic battles between Liverpool and Manchester City in the race for last season’s league title is set to resume this afternoon when they lock horns at Wembley Stadium in the season opening FA Community Shield with pride and bragging rights at stake, writes Tunde Sulaiman

F

or lovers of the ‘beautiful game’ as espoused by the English Premier League, this afternoon’s clash between Manchester City and Liverpool in the FA Community Shield cannot come soon enough as it is a clear indication of the return of their weekly doses of football tonic.

The traditional season opener is usually between the winner of the Premier League and the FA Cup, but as City won both competitions last season, their opponents will be the 2018–19 Premier League runners-up, Liverpool in the 97th edition of the fixture.

Often seen as the unofficial English football’s ‘Super Cup’, this afternoon’s fixture sees a continuation of the epic battle between the two stand out teams of the last Premier League campaign, which served fans some of the most enthralling twists and turns ever seen in the world’s most watched domestic game.

Although ultimately won by City, courtesy of a solitary point over Liverpool 98 to 97, in seasons past the points’ tally of the Anfield outfit would have been more than enough to have won them the title and finally be able to lay to rest the club’s 29-year wait to once again return to the pinnacle of the game in England.

Incidentally perhaps what was even more stunning about the campaign last season, was that the fact that the team that eventually won the title lost three times; while the team that they edged out only lost once!

But the curtains fell on the 2018/19 season same 76days, and now the attention has shifted to the new season and today’s FA Community Shield, which outcome can often set the tone for the new campaign for the teams taking part.

Handled by two of the most outstanding managers of their generation, in Spaniard Pep Guardiola of City and Jurgen Klopp, a German, in charge of Liverpool, the clash between the two sides will be the 170th face-off between the two giants of the North West dating back to April 28, 1894.

And just like their epic Premier League tussle of last season, the results between the two is also razor thin with the Citizens holding a slight advantage over the Reds 85 wins to 84.

Guardiola’s passing and pressing style has been a hallmark of his sides at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City.

He likes his teams to be fast moving, to dominate possession, and to be relentless in going forward. Without the ball, he expects them to use just as much energy in chasing down their opponents in order to win it back.

He is also a master psychologist which was manifested in the way he was able to get his team not to panic even when as at January 3 they were seven points behind then leaders, Liverpool, which appeared to be cruising towards their first ever Premier League title.

But in a stunning change in fortunes the Citizens then put together an amazing 13-game unbeaten run which took them once again to the summit of English league football.

Incidentally one of their ‘victims’ during this run was Liverpool and it was the only defeat the Anfield side suffered the whole campaign.

Pep’s opposite number, Klopp also employs a number of the same principles, and through the ‘Gegenpress’ has been one of the few managers who have been able to consistently trouble Guardiola’s teams.

Although in the last campaign, Klopp failed to get the better of the Spaniard in their two direct head-to-head clashes in the league, with City grinding out a draw at Anfield and winning the reverse fixture at the Etihad, overall the German has an impressive record against the man born in Santpedor.

Klopp has won half of his meetings with Guardiola’s sides over the years – eight of 16 games. No other manager who has faced Guardiola more than 10 times can even claim to have won one quarter of their matches.

Klopp’s style, so similar in many ways to Guardiola’s, clearly works as his kryptonite, and it accounted for City’s Champions League hopes last season as they lost home and away to Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

City had a golden chance to win the first Premier League meeting between the two sides this season at Anfield but Riyad Mahrez skied a late penalty and it finished goalless.

Klopp somewhat mitigated the pain of losing the league title on the final day of the season by going on to win the UEFA Champions League beating fellow Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur in the final played at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano,  on June 1.

Both sides recorded mixed results in their pre-season tune up games in the build up to today’s Wembley clash, with City enjoying a much better run of results compared to Liverpool’s.

While City only lost one of the four games they played – a penalty shootout loss to Wolves in the final of the Premier League Asia Trophy, Klopp’s side only managing one win in five.

The European champions lost to Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, Sporting Lisbon and Napoli, which ended in an embarrassing 3-0 reversal at the hands of Italian side, Napoli last week.

However, they did salvage some pride with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Lyon in Geneva on Wednesday.

But the 52-year-old native of Stuttgart has been quick to wave aside the poor results evening claiming that it would be “completely mad to deduce how the season will unfold from Wembley’s result.”

Speaking in Edinburgh on Monday after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Napoli at Murrayfield, and before flying to a training camp in France, Klopp emphasised the absence of leading players over the past few weeks and how pleased he will be to see Alisson, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino for the first time this season when they meet in Évian.

Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri are back in training after injury too but Klopp will not have Sadio Mane around until tomorrow. Mane played in the Africa Cup of Nations final for Senegal just over two weeks ago.

Only then, four days before the Premier League opener against Norwich at Anfield on Friday, will Klopp have his full squad together. It is a situation which adds fuel to his player burnout argument.

“I don’t want to find excuses before we play City,” Klopp said, “but we had a completely different pre-season. We played without six players and to say this must be the statement for us would be completely mad.”

Disconcerted to discover the general view of the Community Shield is as a “curtain-raiser” to the season, Klopp added: “It’s a good test of the things that are there [in place]. We have to defend in a good way, because if you don’t defend well against City, we can get a proper knock.”

Wednesday’s win over Lyon clearly vindicated Klopp, as the return of some his key players led to an upturn in fortunes of the Reds. The Geneva friendly marked the first pre-season game for Alisson, Brazil team-mate Firmino and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who all returned to training on Monday after the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations respectively.

Liverpool conceded only 22 goals last season, one fewer than City, so he should not be anticipating frailty.

Klopp won the Super Cup in Germany twice, in 2013 and 2014 – each time against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich – but he was caustic about the importance of those games too: “In Germany I won it twice but nobody mentions it. The Super Cup – you win it, nobody cares; you lose it and some care.”

Unfortunately as the German is all too aware of, in football winning is the name of the game and coaches are ultimately always judged by the outcome of their last match.

With a lot of pride and bragging rights at stake, fans should be in for an enthralling afternoon of football, especially as taking part in their first Community Shield since 2006 (when they beat then champions, Chelsea 2-1) would love nothing more than to lift the shield at the expense of the side that broke their hearts last May.
